One morning, I was going out of town for some important office work, but my Tata Nexon EV wasn’t starting.
I was in a panic situation and pretty surprised because it happened for the first time after a year.
Facing Nexon EV starting problems was unexpected for me, so I quickly called the service centre and spoke with an expert.
He guided me to fix my Tata Nexon EV start issue. Now, I’m here to explain exactly what I did, so you can fix your Nexon EV if it is not starting.
In this blog, you’ll know the common reasons and how to fix them easily if your Nexon EV is not starting. So, let’s start without delay.
1. Battery Problems
The first thing the service expert told me to check was the battery. If your Nexon EV won’t start, it may be because of battery issues.
You might notice dim lights or hear no sound when you try to start it.
The expert suggested that I should use a multimeter to check the battery voltage.
A healthy battery should show around 12.6 volts. If it’s below 12 volts, you need to charge or replace it.
You can also use a jumper cable, and connect the red cable to the positive terminal(+ sign) and the black cable to the negative(- sign).
If your jump-starting doesn’t work, plug your vehicle into a charger and wait until it’s fully charged.
2. Corroded or Loose Connections
You have to check the wiring connections, he said that corrosion or loose connections can create problems in starting your EV.
If you found corrosion then use a simple mixture of one tablespoon of baking soda with one cup of water.
I used an old toothbrush to remove the corrosion from the terminals, cleaned it with water, and dried it.
Also, you have to make sure both the positive and negative cables are tightly connected. If they’re loose, grab a wrench and tie them up.
3. Charging Issues
Another common reason your Nexon EV won’t start could be low battery charge.
I had once left my EV without charging for a few days, and that led to this problem.
I suggest you keep your battery above 20% at all times.
When you plugged in, check your dashboard or charger lights.
If they don’t light up or show a warning, there may be an issue with the charging.
4. Software Glitches
The service expert also mentioned that software glitches can sometimes cause the EV not to start.
If you see error messages or your dashboard isn’t responding, this could be the issue.
I turned off my Nexon EV and waited for about 5 minutes before turning it back on. It helps to fix small software glitches.
You can check your infotainment system and look for “Software Update” in the settings. Follow the steps to update it.
If issues are not solved, you can reset the infotainment system by holding the power button until it reboots.
5. Electrical System Malfunctions
If turning the ignition does nothing, there may be an issue with the ignition switch itself.
Check for any physical damage around the ignition area. If damaged, it needs replacing with the help of an expert.
6. Electric Motor and Relay Issues
If you hear clicking sounds but your Nexon EV not starting then this is related to the electric motor or relay.
The relay manages the power distribution to the electric motor and other parts of EVs.
He told me If you hear clicks but no engine noise, it is because of the starter relay.
It’s usually found in the fuse box under the hood.
Also, check the wires connected to the electric motor to confirm they’re not damaged or have loose connections.
Final Thoughts
I think knowing why your Tata Nexon EV might not start can help you fix the problem quickly.
If your Tata Nexon EV is not starting, you must fix battery problems, loose connections, charging issues, software glitches, electric motor, and electric system malfunctions.
I suggest you follow the tips mentioned above and you’ll enjoy a smoother experience with your Nexon EV.
As per my experience, many of these issues can be fixed at home (as I learned during my call with the expert), but some problems are more complicated.
If you’ve tried these fixes and still can’t start your Nexon EV, it’s best to visit a Tata service centre.
