Autonomous Vehicle

An autonomous vehicle is a vehicle that does not need a human operator. Such a vehicle deploys driver assistance technologies. Such driving ranges from stage 0 to stage 5. These are six stages of operation.

Overview

As of now, the market does not have fully autonomous vehicles. Although there is use of automated cars and self-driving cars, these are not completely automated vehicles.

The TESLA is among the list of companies that are developing the stage 5 vehicle. In fact, TESLA is close to development level 5 vehicles.

How does autonomous driving work?

Autonomous driving works  in six stages as mentioned below:

Stage 0                                  No automation. The driver completely operates the car.

Driver assistance is given in the form of warnings; eg, blind point or lane departure warnings.

Stage 1 The driver is completely in control of the vehicle with assistance from a single automated feature. This can be automated acceleration and braking, like in the case of adaptive cruise control

In this, the speed of the car adjusts in an automatic manner to keep up with the speed of traffic at a safe distance; or automated steering, in which the driver is guided by features like lane centring.

Stage 2 As in stage 2, the driver is completely in command of operating the vehicle.

However, automation at stage 2 assists with two automated features, like, acceleration, braking, or steering.

Stage 3 Under particular conditions, automation at stage 3 makes a vehicle operate autonomously.

However, a human driver needs to actively monitor conditions and take control of the vehicle when the system alerts.

Stage 4 In stage 4, a vehicle is completely self-operational within particular boundaries. It needs no attention or assistance from a human driver. It may not include features like pedals or a steering wheel.

Examples of stage 4 self-driving vehicles are local driverless taxis that operate within geofenced boundaries.

Stage 5 Fully self-driving vehicles that need no driver assistance or monitoring. These operate without boundaries or conditions. While things are being done in this area, the technology is not completely implemented yet.

Features of Autonomous Electric Vehicles:

  • Total human assistance free–The advanced level of autonomous electric vehicles is completely free from drivers. The car completely operates on advanced technology and AI.
  • Remote sensing technology–Remote sensing technology is used in such cars.
  • Machine learning and AI–The autonomous electric car makes use of the fusion of AI and machine learning.

Applications of Autonomous Electric Vehicles

  • No room for human error–Fully autonomous electric vehicles will not leave room for any human error that is the actual cause of the accident.
  • This technology will wipe off the need for private parking spaces to a greater extent.

Conclusion

Autonomous electric vehicles will redefine technology in the days to come and fully automated vehicles will change the dimension of the automobile industry.

In the future, level 5 electric vehicles will be available on the road and all this development will ultimately bring safety to the passengers. There is a lack of full safety because of human error.
